In 2063, the first earth-vessel capable of warp speed, the Phoenix, was launched in Bozeman, Montana and its warp drive successfully tested by Zefram Cochrane. The Phoenix’ warp signature was scanned by a Vulcan vessel that decided to establish first contact with humanity. After being briefed by Cochrane himself, the Vulcans decided to contact the New United Nations and presented an ambassador to the general assembly in October 2063. Until then, news about first contact had already spread across civil populations and people were eager to find out more. As some of the states remained somewhat sceptical towards Vulcan motives and The Southern American Coalition even urged to remobilize troops worldwide, the Vulcan High Command decided to offer help as a token of peace. They repaired the ozone layer of earth, provided material and shuttles to reactivate the abandoned DY-facility in orbit around Earth. However, they only allowed DY-facility to be operated by a unified Space Agency.
In 2066, the United Earth Space Probe Agency UESPA was founded as a part of the New United Nations. With many states now being more worried about outer space than about other states, conventional military budgets were drastically cut in order to build up a formidable presence in space. As the Vulcans were far ahead of the technological level of earth and other species still unknown to humanity, the following years would later be called the “lonely race for space”. The Vulcan High Command denied the request for contacting other species in place of Earth, demanding more efforts to fight the effects of World War III.
The “Friendship” program was initiated to reach out for other intelligent life so humanity would not be that dependent on Vulcan counsel anymore. In order to do so, a series of 12 warp-capable probes, the “Friendship” probes, were sent into deep space, containing messages and information about earth. The probes were reconfigured testing beds for warp-reactors and nacelles.
As the Vulcans found the Friendship-probes to be unwise and premature, they continued to withhold any support but medical to earth. However, they had to admit that the arrival of the S.S. Conestoga in 2076 and the successful founding of Terra Nova Colony and the expansion of New Berlin were indeed impressive, considering that World War III was only over for 23 years.
But the contrast between the New United Nations and the isolated Eastern Coalition could not have been stronger: Still suffering from radiation and famines, most of the member states had been unable to recover. Pakistan and India barely managed to hold off raids from Chinese war lords and Colonel Green continued to expand his territory, killing all radiation-victims he could get his hands on.
When a nuclear power plant in China exploded due to the lack of maintenance in 2084, a Vulcan survey vessel was in orbit around Earth. The Vulcans decided to investigate the affected area. As most people in the Eastern Coalition had not yet heard of the Vulcans, many people panicked. The Vulcan ambassador confronted the New United Nations Assembly with their observations, in a speech that would later be known as the “Vulcan plead for unity”. He held out the prospect of being introduced to other species if humanity really could unite. Especially the European states opposed the idea of reestablishing contact to the Eastern Coalition, fearing that such an unpopular step would bring their governments down. In 2085, India and Pakistan provided them with a perfect solution: In order to defend them against incursions by troops under command of Colonel Green, they declared the United States of India and broke the diplomatic ice by asking to be allowed into the New United Nations, being willing to pay reparations for their actions in World War III.
With India welcomed into the NUNO, European states dispatched troops to bring Colonel Greens soldiers down. When a French task force bombarded his headquarters, Green was killed in 2087. It marked the last military conflict being fought amongst humans until today.
Afterwards, the situation in the former Eastern Coalition drastically changed. Some attempts to restore a bigger China by politicians were turned down by the local populations and the former districts evolved into smaller republics.
